Frequently asked questions

Check the expiry date of OPUS card

1. Why do I have to renew my OPUS card?
OPUS cards have an expiry date (four years for cards without a photo). As of that date, the card will no longer work, even if it still contains valid fares; at that point, you will have to pay for any trips you take.
2. Where can I see my OPUS card's expiry date?
To see the expiry date, you have to scan it at an OPUS terminal. You can also follow this link for checking your card's expiry date. Other ways to check the expiry date include scanning your card at a fare vending machine, asking for a balance receipt at a point of sale (convenience store, pharmacy), asking a fare collector at a metro station, or contacting your public transit system's customer service department.

A $6 fee is required for the replacement of an OPUS card without a photo.

Be advised that, depending on the condition of the card, a $6 fee may apply, and you must buy at least one fare to receive a new OPUS card.

12. My card has been expired for more than six months and it contained valid fares. Is it possible to recover these fares?

If your OPUS card can be scanned at a service centre, the clerk will provide specific instructions for each public transit system for which you have fares remaining.

If your card cannot be scanned (because it is defective or broken), any remaining fares will be lost, since there is no way to determine how many fares are left on a card that has been expired for more than six months.

13. If I pay cash to get on the bus or use regular tickets to get to a service centre or ticket office, can I get a refund for my trip?

Cardholders are responsible for paying for the trip to the service centre or ticket office.

You can also contact your public transit system's customer service department to find out the renewal or replacement options available to you.

14. Why is the expiry date set at four years?
Given the large volume of OPUS cards without a photo issued each year, and to remain in line with the chip card manufacturer's guarantee, it was necessary to set an expiry date to be able to effectively track active cards, as well as those customers no longer use.
15. Are expired cards recycled?
Yes. The copper in the OPUS card is recovered. The other materials are shredded and burned for energy recovery. Not a single OPUS card ends up in a landfill.
