What is an OPUS card ?
An OPUS card is made of rigid plastic with an embedded microchip that contains a memory device onto which the various transit fares are stored.

How long does an OPUS card last ?
The service life of an OPUS card depends on the type of user: two years for 12- to 25-year old students; three years for 6- to 11-year old school children; four years for individuals who pay the regular full fare; and seven years for seniors 65 years and over.

Where can I charge transit fares onto my OPUS card ?
You can charge your OPUS card at a fare booth in the métro, at a metropolitan ticket counter and at your public transit company’s usual points of sale. You will find a list of currently available points of sale by clicking here. Several automatic fare vending machines are in operation in métro and commuter train stations so that you may recharge your OPUS card. Fare vending machines accept both debit and credit cards. Some also accept cash payments. When buying transit fares, keep your receipt, as it is your proof of purchase. You will also need it if you are entitled to a tax credit.

Is it still possible to obtain single tickets ?
Yes, from an automatic fare vending machine, from metropolitan ticket counters and from a fare collector in the métro.

Where can I verify the contents of my OPUS card ?
At all transit fare points of sale, at an automatic fare vending machine and at any recharging terminal.

Can my child pay the reduced fare without having a student OPUS card ?
Since November 1, students between the ages of 12 and 25 can pay the reduced fare only if they have a registered photo ID OPUS card.

What should I do if my OPUS card is lost or stolen ?
Reduced fare
For STM and AMT clients:
Go to SPEC Photo as soon as possible (2020 University St., McGill metro station). Your old card will then be cancelled, making it unusable by anyone. A new card will be issued, containing the fare balance remaining at the time you reported your card lost or stolen. You will be required to pay a $13.50 fee.
RTL, STL and RTC clients should consult their transit provider’s website.

Will new fares come into effect with the introduction of the smart card ?
The various transit fares already in effect will not change with the arrival of the smart card. Fares will be integrated into the smart card according to their cost at the time of purchase. However, you must pay $3.50 for your OPUS card, instead of $7, until December 31, 2009.

When will I be able to charge my OPUS card ?
You can charge monthly transit fares onto your OPUS card as of the 20th of each month. The OPUS card can be charged with monthly fares up to three months in advance. Different transit fares can also be loaded onto your card according to your needs. For example, you coul charge it with six STM single fares, eight STL tickets and an AMT zone 3 TRAM pass. Consult the website of your local transit company for more information about the gradual availability of transit fares and the dates on which they will be offered for sale.
Where can I go to obtain more information ?
Customer service points are located at Honoré-Beaugrand, Jean-Talon, Lionel-Groulx, Côte-Vertu and Berri-UQAM metro stations. They are open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The customer service centre at Berri-UQAM station is also open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may also consult the AMT, RTL or STL websites for more details.
How do I go about registering my personal data and benefiting from the replacement guarantee ?
If you pay the full fare, you must complete a registration form to benefit from the replacement guarantee. Complete details will be available on this site in 2009
If you pay a reduced or intermediate fare, you will automatically benefit from the replacement guarantee, as your OPUS card contains your photo and personal data.

Will my personal data be kept confidential ?
Every security measure will be taken to uphold the confidentiality standards that govern all public transit authorities.

Will my photo still be necessary ?
A photo is still required for transit users who enjoy reduced or intermediate fare privileges. Your photo will be printed on the back of your OPUS card.

Can I make a hole in the OPUS card ?
No, because you could damage the chip, and the card would then be unusable.

Has this new equipment been fully tested ?
This technology has been tried and tested elsewhere in the world, in cities such as Lyons, Paris and San Francisco. In Québec, Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) already uses smart cards.

Are smart cards absolutely secure ?
The technology behind smart cards is reputed to be very reliable. Even the banking community is now adopting this technology.

Will there still be an income tax credit for the purchase of a monthly fare ?
Yes. When you charge your OPUS card with a monthly fare, you will receive a receipt. Keep it, as you will be able to use this receipt on your income tax return to obtain a tax credit.

Will the OPUS card allow me to take an unlimited number of trips during the month ?
All the rules and privileges for the transit fares remain the same. Thus, if you charge your OPUS card with a monthly fare, you will still be able to take an unlimited number of trips during the month.

How many transit fares can I load onto my OPUS card ?
You can charge your OPUS card with up to four different transit fares.
